I love movies. It’s probably related to my ADHD, but whether in the theater or my living room, few things relax me as much as watching a movie, just staying in one place and focusing on a single piece of media from beginning to end. It allows me to shut my mind off and live within the moment, and if the movie itself is really good? Well, that’s just gravy.
Anyway, because of all of this, I end up watching a lot of movies. So, I thought it might be a fun way to generate some content by doing a roundup of the movies I watched each month and give each one a small rating. But, since posting just a list is a boring thing to do, I thought I would go ahead and write a bit about both my favorite and least favorite movie each month. Please note, if you want to keep up with what will eventually be here each month in real time, you can follow me on Letterboxd, where I give a score to every movie I watch. But, then you wouldn’t come here. Maybe that’s a bad idea. Don’t follow me on Letterboxd. That is a stupid idea.
Favorite Movie of August 2026: The Odyssey – 4/5
You can say what you want about the historical accuracy of this movie, or the casting decisions, or whatever. I think you’re probably wrong about all of it. But, I also don’t want to talk about any of that right now. Instead, I want to talk about what this movie represents to me. This is a movie-ass movie. This is a summer blockbuster type of movie that I grew up watching in theaters. This is the type of movie that used to sell out for weeks and have everyone talking about it. The Odyssey is Titanic. The Odyssey is the Godfather. The Odyssey is Citizen Kane. It’s a movie made by and starring people who love to make movies, and that love created an experience you can only get from movies. This is an event and a half of a movie, and I love it so much because of that.
Least Favorite Movie: The Last House 1.5/5
I don’t know that I have ever felt a movie fall off for me so quickly. I actually enjoyed the first half. The idea of a family stuck in a single location trying to figure out how to not only survive, but exist with each other, is an interesting one, and I think that part was handled pretty well pre time-jump. But, then the movie became a silly monster movie and almost all tension was shattered through a series of stupid decisions made by a bunch of the characters. And then it just ended. I understood the grander themes of the movie — respect for nature, climate change, etc. — I just hated how they handled it all in the back half.
